What is DAF Day?
DAF Day, short for Donor-Advised Fund Day, is an annual celebration of charitable giving through donor-advised funds. Held on October 10th (10/10), it’s your day to recommend grants from your DAF to your favorite nonprofits, joining a wave of generosity across the nation.
Wait…Let’s Start With, “What is a DAF ?”
DAFs (Donor Advised Funds) are tax-efficient accounts that allow YOU to contribute money or assets to charity, receive a tax deduction, and then recommend grants from the fund. All while your charitable funds grow, tax-free.
A DAF qualifies you for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you make a gift to the fund—without immediately having to choose the charities you want to support. If you so choose, you can support a number of charitable organizations without having to retain records for a number of separate contributions.
DAF giving is a smart and effective choice for all kinds of giving; generous giving, monthly giving, one time gifts, and even planned giving. DAF giving is a growing way of giving and it is exciting for Roots Ethiopia!

How You Can Start Your Own DAF
Don’t have a DAF yet? It’s not too late for you to get involved:
- You choose a sponsoring organization: Many financial institutions offer DAFs, including Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, and Vanguard Charitable. Note: Fidelity Charitable has a great explanation of their services for DAF giving here.
- You open an account: This process is similar to when you open a regular investment account.
- You make an initial contribution: You can contribute cash, securities, or other assets.
- You invest your funds: Your contribution can grow tax-free over time.
- You start recommending grants: You can support Roots Ethiopia and other charities you care about.
